The dog days of summer can spawn the desire to outdo the Great Gatsby when it comes to parties. But who has the time to manicure the lawn, banish dust bunnies, spring clean and hand cut cucumber sandwiches to serve on porcelain plates? If your vision is lofty but your schedule is brimming with appointments, don’t fret. It is possible to plan a knockout weekend celebration even if your agenda is full.
The Plan: Entertaining expert Ed Lent recommends blueprinting your party. This includes considering how the party will flow from start to finish and making notes on what you need for every step of the event. “Keep a simple entertaining ‘kit’ of items that you can depend on when entertaining. Decorative items, like pots of flowers, candle sticks, even a bowl of fruit, make instant and reusable centerpieces for several occasions of entertaining.”
The Food: Use as many ready-made options as possible. Lent recommends keeping pre-made sauces, dips, marinades and frozen appetizers in stock as instant party resources. You can always add cheeses, fresh fruits and vegetables, and gourmet snacks at the last minute. Or mix in cultural and dietary menu variations. “Parties are more interesting when there is diversity of flavors, foods and friends. Try to vary the menu with vegetarian, low-fat, and low-calorie options to cover a range of tastes.”
The Atmosphere: Who has time to clean the whole house? Instead, focus on the rooms your guests will see. “Instead of trying to organize every closet in your home, focus on clearing just enough space in the front hall closet for company’s coats,” says professional organizer Jamie Novak. For an extra touch, start the welcome at the front door. Placing a simple decorative basket of logs by the front door and hanging some jingle bells can make all the difference.
The Work: Who says you have to do it all? “Delegate a friend to mix drinks, pass snacks, and keep the ice bucket filled,” says Lent. Hire out the one thing you dislike to do most. Break down tasks pre-party tasks over the course of a few days and don’t obsess over the small details. Chances are, nobody will notice.
More than anything, don’t forget to invite yourself to the party. Take a deep breath, relax, and remember to enjoy your summer.
