Paul Mitchell CEO Exec. Produces Documentary Movie “FUEL”

Paul Mitchell CEO Exec. Produces Documentary Movie “FUEL”

The CEO and co-founder of Paul Mitchell, John Paul DeJoria, has assumed another hat. This time, it’s as Executive Producer of a new eco-documentary called FUEL that investigates the replacement of fossil fuels with renewable energy.

Is America addicted to oil? You bet. Which teenager do you know that wants the keys to a Prius? It’s all about the gas guzzler and the SUV. The film debuts in New York on March 13th, and the cast includes DeJoria himself, Julia Roberts, Richard Branson, Willie Nelson, Sheryl Crow and other glitterati who are passionate about the ecosystem.

DeJoria has been a longtime supporter of alternative energy, from utilizing solar power for the harvesting of Awapuhi at the Paul Mitchell farm in Hawaii to supporting the development of solar-powered vehicles via the Stanford Solar Car Project. “Alternative fuels are one of the most efficient answers to our nation and the world’s energy needs,” says DeJoria. “The FUEL film is a great example of just exactly how alternative energy makes sense.”

It’s a documentary worth seeing, and it also won the Sundance Audience Award this past year.

Elizabeth Arden’s “Pretty” Fragrance Lives Up to its Name

Elizabeth Arden’s “Pretty” Fragrance Lives Up to its Name

During the craziness of Fashion Week, I attended a breakfast launch of the new fragrance “Pretty” by Elizabeth Arden. It turned out to be a very pretty morning indeed.

The Givaudan team responsible for creating the charming fragrance were justifiably proud of the amount of work involved in bringing new fragrant molecules to the market. Internationally renowned perfumer Claude Dir was at the breakfast to tell us how and why he considers Pretty a “perfect fragrance.”

(Claude Dir and me)

Dir was brought in by the Arden team to create this perfume, and he says, “I saw the world through very feminine ‘pink colored glasses’” for this project. He was especially excited about the new Givaudan molecule called “Petalia” that was the starting point for the journey. “It truly is the perfect feminine floral essence. It was never used before in fragrance development so I was intrigued and driven to create something spectacular for Arden.”

Why is Petalia so different? It’s easy to wear and imparts a unique singular impression.

The other fragrant, floral notes are:

Top Notes

Italian Mandarin Orpur: Apparently this has a luscious quality that is both sweet and sharp. Delish!

Orange Blossom: I dig anything that has orange notes. Citrus rules. Period.

Peach Nectar: Sweetness and succulence rules in this fruit, n’est ce pas?

Middle Notes

Petalia: the Arden team considers this the very essence of femininity. We can find no fault.

Star Jasmine: I grew up in India with jasmine bushes surrounding my house. LOVE.

Pink Iris & White Peony: I must say that any floral scent without the peony would leave much to desire.

Drydown

Fluffy Musk: Yes, apparently musk can be fluffy (think of smoky musk). Another scent that I love.

Jacaranda Wood & Creamy Amber: The warm amber notes inspire comfort, happiness…think of pretty mom baking pie in the kitchen.

I am also enchanted with the packaging, and the floral petals engraved on the bottle top. The beautiful rounded shape of this fragrance looks like a bud vase.

And here’s a tip: to make the fragrance last longer, apply the body lotion first, and then spritz the scent.

Eau de Parfum Spray:  1.7 fl oz ($49); 3.3 fl oz ($62)

Body Lotion: 6.8 fl oz ($30)

Body Powder with Puff: 3.4 oz ($37.50)

Anne Hathaway’s Look at the 81st Oscars

Anne Hathaway’s Look at the 81st Oscars

Who: Anne Hathaway at the 81st Oscars, dressed in a sparkling jewel encrusted Armani Privé gown.

Makeup artist: Jillian Dempsey

The Look:

Anne’s perfect brows framed her face and her long, lush lashes really made her eyes pop. She donned a deep berry-toned lip to complete her look. To get Anne’s look, try Lancôme Le Crayon Poudre in Sable to fill in and shape the brows. Lightly dust Lancôme Color Design Eye Shadow in Ciel du Soir over the entire eyelid followed by Le Crayon Khôl in Black Ebony applied to the upper lash line. Lightly smudge so there are no harsh lines. Apply several coats of Lancôme Ôscillation Mascara for a faux-lash effect. For just a hint of color, dust Lancôme Blush Subtil in Sheer Amourose on the apples of the cheeks. To create her berry stained pout, apply Lancôme Color Fever Lipstick in Brickhouse.

Freida Pinto’s Makeup at the 81st Oscars

Freida Pinto’s Makeup at the 81st Oscars

Who: Slumdog Millionaire actress Freida Pinto, wearing a gorgeous navy dress by John Galliano.

Makeup Artist: Christina Zilber from Jouer Cosmetics

How To Get The Look:

The most important aspect to the celebrity look is flawless skin. Christina recommends beginning by lightly evening your complexion using the Jouer luminizing moisture tint followed by the Jouer age-repairing brightner where necessary, around the eyes, the nose and the corners of the mouth, follow by a light dusting of the Jouer mineral face powder. Christina then recommends applying a light peach or pink blush to the apple of the cheek for a fresh, youthful glow.

For the eyes, she recommends drawing a thick line on the top and bottom eyelid with Jouer’s eye definer “Noir”. Using a large flat eye brush, Christina recommends applying the Jouer’s powder eyeshadow “caviar” – a shimmering navy charcoal, to the lid of the eyes, compliment with “truffle” – a matte platinum grey on the crease of the eye, followed by “parfait” – shimmering deep lavender on the brow line. Follow the look with two coats of the Jouer mascara “black” to both the top and bottom lashes.

For that perfectly pale baby pink lip, Zilber recommends the Jouer amelie lipstick followed by the Jouer mist gloss to add a bit of shimmer and shine.
