Sam Fine, celebrity makeup artist and author of Fine Beauty, has a DVD out called “The Basics of Beauty.”
If a picture is worth a thousand words, then this DVD is worth a thousand pictures. In this extremely engaging video, Fine gives us several makeovers from start to finish, including one on model Iman.
When I watched the video, I was astounded to see all the techniques I had ZERO clue about (e.g. putting foundation on your eyelids to ensure the eyeshadow stays in place?; using fine brushstrokes to fill out your eyebrows instead of penciling them in a sweeping, continuous line?).
Watching Sam Fine transform three gorgeous faces into runway and print ready canvases was an educational experience for me – to say the very least. I’ve gobbled countless of makeup artist books from Bobbi Brown’s to Lucky Magazine’s, but the education you get from watching a DVD is priceless.
Fine says that certain makeup elements, like foundation, are like “underwear” — they are indispensable. Once you find a good foundation and concealer, stick with them. The other elements are like accessories, and eyeshadows and cheek blush are aspects you can merrily change and mix and match.

I have also had a chance to preview Sam Fine’s new DVD and am so happy to see that celebrities are not the focus. The make-overs are on real everyday women and the education on application is amazing.
